Senior International Health Researcher
Dr. Homero Martinez received his M.D. from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He was trained in clinical pediatrics at the Hospital Infantil de Mexico, and received his Ph.D. in International Nutrition from Cornell University, as well as post-doctoral training in medical anthropology at the University of Connecticut and the University of Florida.
He is interested in different topics dealing with primary health care delivery at the community level, and has carried out research combining nutrition and ethnography on topics such as the nutritional and hydration management of acute diarrhea, home-care of acute respiratory infections, training of primary health care workers, nutrition education interventions to combat malnutrition, and on different aspects of nutritional epidemiology and public health. He has published 66 articles in peer-reviewed journals with 450 citations, written 47 book chapters, edited 10 books, and presented 162 papers and posters in scientific meetings. He holds teaching positions in various graduate programs oriented to nutrition and health services, having graduated 13 Masters and 5 Doctoral students, also serving in over 25 graduate committees. He is an active member of the Mexican National Academy of Medicine, the Mexican Academy of Pediatrics and of the Mexican National System of Investigators, as well as of different international societies, including the American Institute of Nutrition (AIN), Society for International Nutrition Research (SINR), American Anthropological Association (AAA), and Latin American Society of Nutrition (SLAN). On numerous occasions he has served as a Consultant to UNICEF and WHO, served as a board member for the Society for International Nutrition Research, and at present he is member of the executive board of the OSLO CHILD HEALTH RESEARCH CENTER, supported by the World Bank, as well as of the Technical Advisory Group for the Child and Member for the Children and Adolescent Health Division, WHO, Geneva, Switzerland. He is also part of the editorial board of Archives of Medical Research, Field Methods, and BoletÃn Médico del Hospital Infantil de México.
