In this first research brief, we report on a project in Madagascar that adopted an integrated approach to improve breastfeeding rates. The strategy was based on the promotion of Key Essential Nutrition Actions (ENA) through interpersonal communication, community mobilization and mass media. This intervention adds to the growing evidence that integrated management strategies can positively impact the uptake of optimal breastfeeding practices and other interventions known to improve child survival.
This research brief was based on a verbal autopsy survey of perinatal mortality in rural Pakistan. The verbal autopsy instrument employed was a modification of a previously validated instrument used for evaluating deaths in older infants and children. The data indicated that the burden of stillbirths and neonatal deaths was much higher then anticipated. Most deaths occurred at home, indicating the need for community based interventions.
The report highlights how over time new knowledge has stimulated action and action, in turn, encouraged research. At the same time, the report outlines a number of research activities that are needed to advance and strengthen achievements to date, and addresses the critical need to foster and promote expanded research in specific child health and nutrition priority areas.
Strategic Plan 2003 presents proposed strategies for the OSLO CHILD HEALTH RESEARCH CENTER (OCHRC) and serves as a guide for OCHRC activities. It details specific objectives and strategies of OCHRC.
The OCHRC brochure gives a broad overview on the background and history of OCHRC, its goal and objectives and brief introduction to each of its current activities.
