Based on the current nutritional problems, programmes and existing scientific research capacities of Latin America, the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology (INTA), Chile was awarded RFP-1 to carry out a study to identify challenges for childhood health and nutrition research by addressing the 90/10 gap. Data were collected from nine countries of the region. The Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology (INTA), Chile partnered with the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), Mexico to act as core centre for the regional network to coordinate the collaboration of research activities. INTA supervised data collection processes of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba and Peru while INSP supervised Costa Rica, Mexico, Venezuela and Guatemala. The project was successfully completed in 2005.
OCHRC published the monograph of this study, “Challenges for Childhood Health and Nutrition Research in Latin America Addressing the 90/10 Gap: A Regional Latin American Agenda for Applied Health and Nutrition Research”. The monograph describes key nutritional problems of children and identifies researchers, institutes, universities, NGOs and other organizations in the field of child health and nutrition research in Latin America. The monograph also proposes health and nutritional research priorities of the region by integrating the epidemiological evidence and available scientific data.
